Call for Scores from Queer Composers

Iowa Pride Ensembles seeks to amplify the voices of LGBTQIA+ composers within the Midwest region. This competition aims to celebrate to queer artistry and provide a platform for new repertoire that reflects the diverse experiences of our community.

The winning composition will be premiered during Iowa Pride Ensembles’ 2026-2027 season. Please continue reading for piece requirements, prize details, and submission instructions.

Composer Requirements

  • This contest is open to composers that identify as members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

  • Applicants may be of any age and composition experience level.

  • Applicants must currently reside in or have a strong connection (e.g. a student attending a regional university) to the following states: Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota.

  • Applicants must submit their piece before November 15, 2026.

  • Selected composer must agree to a round of edits in collaboration with Iowa Pride Ensembles.

  • Selected composer will commit to attending the premiere performance of their

Composition Requirements

  • Piece must be written for Standard Wind Band Grade 3 according to the American Collegiate Band Association.

  • Piece must be written with Standard Wind Band instrumentation.

Prize Details

  • 1st Place Recipient

    • $500 Prize, World Premiere Performance Opportunity

  • Runner Ups

    • 1-3 Runner Ups will be selected and will split a $250 prize.

    • All Runner Ups will receive a recorded read of their piece by the Iowa Pride Ensembles Concert Band, optionally led by the runner up who will be invited to a rehearsal.

Submission Timeline

  • May 14, 2026 - Composition Competition opens

  • November 15, 2026 - Submissions due to Iowa Pride Ensembles

  • January 15, 2026 - Finalists notified

  • February 15, 2026 - Winners announced publicly

  • April through May 2026 - Rehearsals with Iowa Pride Ensembles Concert Band

To submit your score please email a pdf of the score, an MP3 file of your score (if available), a headshot and bio, and the answers to the below three questions to info@iowaprideensembles.org. Applications without all necessary materials will not be considered. If there are any barriers to your submission do not hesitate to reach out to us with questions.
